1 Peter 5:8
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
Just this week I was listening to a book called Kings Cross: by Timothy Keller and he talked about our adversary and how real and personal he is. It immediately made me think of the passage in 1 Peter about the warning given about our adversary.
In Job, God asks Satan where he came from to which Satan replies “going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it” Job 1:7.
Keller explains that if we believe angelic beings are watching over us, we have to assume (and the bible tells us many times) that intelligent beings are seeking to destroy us with intention. They know and will attack our weakness.
I know this in my mind but I oftentimes brush it off and try to not give the devil too much credit.
I couldn’t stop thinking about the things we consistently battle are not just by happenstance. They are strategic and on purpose.
Which made me realize that we need to be sober and aware that we are fighting a battle.
Recognize That You Have An Adversary Who Wants To Destroy You
God tells us in 1 Peter to be sober and vigilant. Meaning that we need to be aware that yes, we have an adversary and yes, he wants to destroy us.
Rather than thinking you are just having a bad day, recognize that this is the devil actively trying to sabotage you.
Like a roaring lion, he seeks whom he may devour.
He wants you to be short with your kids, he wants you to argue with your husband and he wants to you be unfulfilled in your current life role.
Giving way to those temptations is giving him yet another stronghold in your life.
Guard Your Thoughts
2 Corinthians 10:5 “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
Life’s biggest struggle begins in our mind. We need to “Bring into captivity every thought”
….that phrase is so powerful! Be diligent about the dialog you allow on repeat in your mind.
Claim and redirect your thoughts to the knowledge of Christ.
Read & Memorize God’s Word
12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Sounds like a weapon I want in my arsenal for spiritual warfare.
There is nothing that can measure the importance of getting in God’s word every.single.day.
Even if it means finding one single verse and meditating on it. Write it down and memorize it.
There is power in focusing on a small passage and trying to truly understand the meaning and applying it to your life.
If you are not feeding your spirit, you will starve spiritually and have nothing to fight against darkness.
The bible is alive, active, and will give you spiritual discernment.
Ask The Holy Spirit To For Guidance
2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
So many times we battled the same battles in our strength then get frustrated that we can’t overcome.
But we have not because we ask not. Or because we ask amiss.
We are overcomer’s through him. Not through ourselves. Make a daily practice of asking him to lead you and give you strength in specific areas of weakness.
If you feel a little intimidated or overwhelmed, don’t. There is a practical application that is a fairly simple process.
- Guard Your Mind Like Your Life Depends On It (because it truly does)- Be like Hebrews and “Take every thought captive”. Because the battle truly starts in your mind.
- Make A Commitment To Read God’s Word Every Single Day – Get in God’s word and depend on it alone to decern truth in a world full of lies
- Ask The Holy Spirit To Lead You – Give up control and doing things in your strength and ask the Holy Spirit to give you the power to be an overcomer.
Because mama, you aren’t just having a bad day…..
- Faith is a battleground
- Marriage is a battleground
- Parenting is a battleground
……and they are the devil’s playground.
Be sober and vigilant, dear friend….
