How to start selling DIGITAL PRODUCTS And How It Changed My Business

EEK! I’m so glad you’re here and I am so freaking excited to give you the exact steps to start selling digital products in 2024.

I want to assure you that digital products are alive and well and the potential of how much money you can make creating them is truly endless. 

This is the exact roadmap I used to sell over 50k worth of digital products. 

But first I have to take you back to the start of this story.

A little over 4 years ago, I was deep in the thick of motherhood. And when I say in the thick of motherhood, I mean that We had three kids in three years and I was WAY over my head. 

Don’t get me wrong. I am one hundred percent obsessed with my kids. 

But when I say that motherhood is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, I mean harder than working 6 hours per week, harder than building an online business, harder than college, and even harder than one of my first jobs I spent working in corn fields back in Illinois. 

Yes, you read that right. 

In the midwest, the local farmers hire all the teens to work in the corn fields. It is non stop hard work. I can thank that job for my work ethic. 

I digress. 

At that time In my life, I was starting to realize that going back to work wasn’t going to fit into the plan I had for my life.

I decided to stay home after I had my kids and I felt like the longer I was home, the less valuable I was in the workplace. 

Tons of ideas were racing through my head about how to make money from home. 

I wanted to make money from home but I wanted to be able to be present and not miss anything for my kids. 

So one night, while nursing my baby for the 3rd time and having ideas bouncing through my head I did it. 

I started a blog, right from my phone in the middle of the night. 

It was seriously one of the most exciting and terrifying things I’ve ever done in my entire life.

It made no sense whatsoever since I am not a writer, not good at english (obvi) and am not even the best at spelling. I can thank my readers for always letting me know. I love all you English teachers out there! <3

One year later, I had invested $1,000 into the best blogging course I could find, implemented everything I’d learned, and made my first $10,000!! 

I can’t even express how exciting it was to repay my husband his initial investment of $1,000. I felt like a total baller. 

But….I literally never would have made that much money in the first year without adding a digital product to my revenue streams. 

Early in my blogging career, I focused primarily on ad revenue, affiliate links, and brand deals. But I literally out earned all of those in my first digital product launch. 

That’s why I can’t stop won’t stop shouting it from the mountain tops that digital products are the best way to start and scale an online business.

Choose a profitable niche based of something that you cannot stop talking about 

Okay so let’s talk about niche for a hot second. 

If you aren’t familiar with that term let me give you a brief description. A niche refers to what topic you want to talk about. 

It’s the thing or the idea that you want to build a business around. 

The trick to choosing the right niche is choosing something could literally talk about for hours and will eventually write an in depth blog post about. 

But for the sake of keeping this post brief, the best way for me to sum it up is this…..

Your niche is where your passion and life experiences find a market gap. That’s pretty much it in a nutshell. 

But don’t worry, I promise you literally everybody has a wildly profitable niche bursting inside of them. 

Sometimes it just takes some digging. 

The key takeaway here is that choosing a profitable niche that is authentic to you is super super important and can often be the difference between entrepreneurs that succeed and entrepreneurs that fail.

Lead with a personal brand 

Once you’ve chosen a profitable niche, the next thing you want to do is create a personal brand.

This is another topic that I am so passionate about. I truly believe that every single person should curate a dynamic personal brand. 

I know you might be thinking “I don’t even like social media” or “there are too many people claiming to be experts out there” or “I’m not techy enough”.

Trust me when I say that I have had all of those thoughts. 

But this is the mindset that changed everything for me. 

The internet is not going away. The more we progress as a society, the more we depend on the internet for social connection. The cat is already let out of the bag and is not going back in.

So the way I see it is, If you can’t beat them, join them.

The ugly truth is that those who refuse to embrace this new digital world are eventually going to be left behind

Ok, let me quickly get off my soapbox and tell you why you need a personal brand to sell your digital product. 

Because your personal brand is the #1 differentiator in your market. 

Without it, you have no positioning, and honestly nothing that makes it special because literally anyone can replicate it. 

Secondly, you do not want to sell digital products on Etsy.

Why? Because one, you are giving away your superpower (you) of connecting with your buyer. 

When people buy a digital product on etsy they are rarely like “who is this person and what is their story?”. And two, etsy takes a decent portion of your overall sales which is so lame. 

So like, why give that away when you don’t have to. 

Yes, people can make great money selling digital products on etsy if they get super good at keyword research and the etsy algorithm.

BUT… you could take the same time you are spending learning all of that and put into crafting a personal brand that you can grow over time and that will serve you much longer. 

So yeah, always lead with a personal brand.

Choose one long form platform and one short form platform that you enjoy 

This is a stance I’m willing to die on a hill for. Why? Because long form content has literally 100 times the lifespan than short form content. 

Obviously there are always exceptions to the rule. There will always be random Instagram reels, carousels, or tiktoks that go viral and resurface for a decent timespan. 


…typically speaking, longform content will outlive short form content every.single.time. 

For example, I have blog posts from 4 years ago that still bring in new email subscribers and sales every single day.

While my top performing social media posts will typically last between 48 hours and one week. At the very most a month or two. 

My top advice for anyone wanting to get serious about selling digital products is to choose one long form platform…


  • Blog
  • Podcast
  • Youtube

Followed by a short form content platform.


  • Instagram 
  • Tiktok 
  • Youtube shorts

Pro Tip: Choose each platform based off of those that you are naturally drawn to and find yourself using the most.

If you are wanting to grow a wide and deep business rather quickly, I recommend posting long form 1-3 times per week and short form 1-3 times per day. 

That may sound like a lot but I promise when you lead with a long form piece of content, it makes creating short form content so dang easy. 

The key here is to conduct market research, identify top performing posts in your industry, ask yourself what is missing from those top performing posts, and then recreate top performing posts in your voice and fill in the gap. 

It’s seriously that simple.

Create a lead magnet 

A lead magnet is essentially a way of offering a resource packed full of value in exchange for an email address. 

A lead magnet is often referred to as a freebie, email opt in, or lead magnet. All of your content should be surrounded by one goal. Getting people on your email list. 

And trust me when I say that the majority of your sales will come from your email list. Email is still alive and well and should be a top priority to any online or in person business owner.

The name of the game with a lead magnet that converts is giving your client an overview of a topic they are interested in.

When creating a lead magnet you should be solving the “what” your ideal buyer needs to do to obtain a certain outcome. 

Typically the “how” should be reserved for one of your paid products like a digital product or online course.

Examples of top converting lead magnets are:

  • Masterclass 
  • Workbook 
  • pdf download
  • Video 
  • List 
  • Excel sheet

But a lead magnet is not limited to these formats. It can be pretty much anything.

The whole purpose of a lead magnet is to offer something of value to your ideal buyer so that they will give you their contact information that you can then send a series of emails to create a relationship with them. 

This is one of the most underrated marketing techniques used today.

Mastering building an email list should be your top priority from day one.

Create an irresistible digital product 

Ok, now that you laid a solid foundation of choosing a profitable niche, creating a content strategy, and putting together a high value resource (lead magnet) now it’s time to start monetizing all of your hard work. 

The first and best way to do that is by creating a digital product. 

The number one tip I can give you about creating digital products is to identify one single problem that your ideal buyer has, and create a digital product that helps solve that problem. 

A digital product can vary depending on your niche. But the important thing that you need to understand is that a digital product should be high value, low cost, and a quick win for your ideal buyer.

It should be something they can implement right away and see results quickly. 

Your digital product should be the next step your ideal buyer should take after they download your lead magnet. 

For example: When I was educating about curly hair, my lead magnet was a pdf titled “The beginners guide to curly hair care” and I listed out my 5 step method to taking care of curly hair. 

My digital product answered the very next question all of my followers had which was….”what products should I buy?”.

So my digital product was, you guessed it, a curly hair products guide. 

That single digital product that I created over 2 years ago still makes sales today and is completely automated. 

Examples of a digital product include:

  • Product guide
  • Shopping list 
  • Worksheets
  • Video series 
  • Workshop
  • Masterclass 
  • Templates 
  • Swipe files 
  • Excel spreadsheet 
  • Detailed tutorials 
  • Presets

These are just a few ideas but the possibilities are literally endless.

Write a high converting sales page

This step is fun because it’s where things really start to get interesting. 

You know the old days of having to have the same sales conversation over and over again about why people should buy your product and everything that is included? 

A sales page takes that entire conversation and puts it in one place where you are able to just share the link and it will answer all the questions your ideal buyer has.

The perfect sales page will answer 3 questions that people need to know before they will buy from you. 

  1. Do you understand me?
  2. Can you lead me?
  3. Do you have an exact roadmap that I can follow?

Writing a high converting sales page is incredibly phycological, but don’t let this step scare you.

Create an automated email series that sells your digital product 

Once you have completed all the steps above, it’s time to automate everything by creating a well crafted email series that sells your digital product for you. 

The really cool thing about this step is that once you’ve written your sales page, you can use a lot of that copy within your email segment. 

In this email series, you will combine storytelling (your own personal story of transformation), with everything that is included in your digital product. 

Again, this is basically taking the whole sales conversation and putting it into a series of automated emails. 

This email series is typically between 3-10 days long.

In conclusion:

Selling digital products is simple, not easy. It has transformed my business in ways I never imagined. By following these steps, you can create a passive income stream in your business that pays you whether you choose to work or play.
