I originally started my blog with the intention of focusing on ad revenue and affiliates, but shortly into my blogging journey, I realized that though ad revenue and affiliates are a great supplement, focusing all your efforts on them means leaving money on the table.
When I started breaking down the numbers I quickly realized that I could outearn what I was making with ad revenue or an affiliate in a single day by promoting my own online course.
That’s when I decided to move “creating and marketing my own digital product” to the top of my to-do list. Everything else would be secondary.

I Got STUPID Clear On My Niche
If you want to get serious about making money, you have to get really stinking clear on who the heck you are talking to and what the heck you are talking about.
“Haircare” isn’t enough. Try “Curly Hair Care For Reduced Frizz” or “Frizz Free Curls In 30 Days Or Less”.
Think of it as a niche within a niche. “Haircare” is the niche, and “curly hair care for reduced frizz” is the niche within a niche.
The days of lifestyle blogging are over as are the days of analytical blogging.
We are currently entering the era of niche blogging with a side of personal lifestyle to set you apart.
So you need to go to the drawing board and flush out every possibility you can think of and don’t leave any ideas out.
In the “finding your niche brainstorming process” more is more.
Ask yourself things like:
- What am I naturally good at?
- What is a topic I’m obsessed with?
- What are other people always “picking my brain” about?
- How do I want to contribute to the world?
- Who do I want to help?
- Who do I want to serve?
- What topic do I see myself geeking out about nonstop?
The answers to these questions are crucial to building a long-term, sustainable business online.

I Prioritized Building An Email List From The Very Beginning
I don’t care how many people tell you you need an Instagram account or post on TikTok because of its virality. Yes, when strategized well, Instagram & TikTok can be powerful tools.
But it should be used to drive traffic to your freebie or mico offer that is gathering emails from your buyers.
Building an email list full of buyers is the biggest asset you can add to your business.
As tempting as it is to skip this step in the process, don’t. Make list building your number one strategy while you build your online course so you will have a list of buyers who are excited to work with you when you launch your product.
I Grew My Instagram Account But Never Made It My Top Priority
I believe in social media, but it should only be one part of your business. Don’t keep all your eggs in one basket.
On average only 1% of people on Instagram see your content not to mention the fact that you don’t even own the platform.
It could disappear overnight.
In contrast, my average email open rate is 31.16%. That’s more than 30 times more eyes on my content through email than Instagram.
The moral of the story….start prioritizing your email list…. Yesterday.
I Started Pumping Out Content That Led To My Email Opt In
Your content is what sells your idea. And in order to find what resonates, you need to just start creating content.
Stop overthinking, stop looking for trending sounds, and stop comparing. Just hit the post.
The best way to build an audience and create sharable and engaging content is to create a ton of content and see what sticks. This is called throwing spaghetti against the wall.
This is the only way you will have numbers to analyze and expound upon.
I Consistently Pulled My Audience
When in doubt, ask.
Failing to pull your audience is one of the biggest mistakes I see people make when building online.
Your audience is full of insight on your topic even if you have a small audience. Don’t underestimate their opinions and ask them lots of questions.
As you are creating content and pulling your people, you will have a better idea of what resonates with them which will help you determine what type of product to build and how to position your offer.
I Built An Online Course That Gave A Clear Transformation
The secret to choosing a topic that is profitable is communicating a clear transformation. What will they get at the end of this online course?
It’s so easy to get wrapped up in the details but your client most likely doesn’t even understand them.
What they want (and are willing to pay for) is a solution to their problem.
So when you are creating content, freebies, and courses, always start with the end in mind and reverse engineer to the clear outcome your client will receive.
I Created An Evergreen System To Market My Course & Bring In Sales
Once you have some sales come through, resist the urge to burn it down and create something new.
Instead, take the time to run a feedback loop, update your course, then create a system that sells it evergreen (aka while you sleep).
You don’t need to do this right out of the gate. And it’s ok to take your time.
But you will not be able to scale a course unless you have had people go through it, give you solid feedback, and make necessary updates.
In Conclusion:
You can easily create a highly profitable online course in 30-60 days. You just need to take the time to lay a solid foundation and set yourself up to turn your course into passive income that pays you while you sleep.
Get really clear on who you are talking to
Take the time to thoroughly brainstorm your passion and talents and how to translate that into a very specific online course.
Prioritize email
Make building an email list full of buyers your top priority.
Grow on social media but don’t make it your everything
Master one social media at a time but rather than make it your “end all be all”, use it as a tool to drive traffic to your email list.
Crank out content (don’t overthink it)
Just write. There are a million different ways to become an incredible content creator. But the best (and only) way to get started is to just put stuff out there.
Pull your audience
When in doubt, ask the people. This can be your friend list, in-person friends, or your audience no matter what size. If one person has a question, you can bet that plenty of others do as well.
When you take the time to ask and answer their questions, they will become raving fans that want to buy from you.
Build A Course On Their Response
Become obsessed with the questions people ask, and build a course on their responses.
Make It Evergreen
Then, take your amazing course, turn it into an evergreen funnel that serves people all around the world, and pays you while you sleep.
Xoxo
