When it comes to caring for curly or wavy hair, there are not many things that can make or break your results. Choosing the right products is just one of them.
As a curly hair coach, I work with curls all around the world.
One of the biggest mistakes I see people make when it comes to curly hair care is not understanding how to choose the right products.
When you are not using the right products based on your hair type and what the current needs of your hair are (hint: textured hair’s needs are always changing), then you are defeated before you even get started.
Using the right products is a foundational step in transforming your hair and creating healthy curls that you can rock multiple days.

Not Understanding What Your Hair Needs To Thrive
First, you have to understand the chemical makeup of your hair shaft.
This classic mistake is common in the curly world and in my opinion has been over complicated.
There has been a huge trend in over complicating how to identify your curl type which can leave people feeling stuck.
When in reality, understanding your curly type is only one piece of the puzzle.
And it’s not the most important piece.
In terms of understanding your hair, the density and porosity level play a more important role than your curl type.

Secondly, you need to understand what your hair needs on each washday.
Textured hair is complex by nature and is always changing with hormones, climate, dew point, and many other factors.
In order to get the best possible results on washday, you need to take into account current symptoms you are having.

Mix & Matching Products
Another huge mistake I see people make is mixing and matching products.
I get it, everyone seems to be doing this online.
But the truth is that unless you really understand your hair and how products affect it, you shouldn’t be mixing products from different lines.
Products are formulated by chemists and are designed to complement each other.
Meaning that they contain the right amount of protein and moisture to balance your hair when used in conjunction with products from the same line.
When you choose products from different lines especially early on in your curl journey, it’s a really great way to end up with a protein or moisture overload.
Important note: Mixing and matching products can be a lot of fun.
But if you are getting inconsistent results or struggle to understand how hair types and products work together, I recommend sticking to one complete line of products.
Not Switching it Up
Lastly, a huge mistake I see people make in regards to products is getting a product they love and never switching it up.
We touched on this a bit earlier in this article when we talked about choosing products based on symptoms.
You see, curls need hydration, moisture, and protein to thrive.
Since curls and waves are complex by nature, what they need on a given day is always changing.
Literally everything affects your hair.
So when you get in a rut of using the same products and same routine over and over again, it’s common to see failed results over time.
The reason is that you are treating your hair based on what worked in the past. But your hair has changed with time, humidity and even your hormones.
What worked six months ago may not be working today and that completely normal.
I developed a simple system to test your hair on washday and help you determine if your hair needs moisture, hydration, or protein.
It’s called “The Washday Roadmap ” and it’s included in the Curly Hair Products Made Easy Guide. You can learn more about it here.
In Conclusion:
When it comes to choosing the right curly hair products, make sure you are not making one of these big mistakes.
Not Understanding What Your Hair Needs To Thrive
Take the time to truly understand what your hair needs to thrive and how product and ingredients affect your hair.
Mix & Match Products
When in doubt, stick to one single product line. And any time you are getting inconsistent results, use one single product line.
Not Switching It Up
Don’t get in a rut of using the same products and same routine and don’t be afraid to test and experiment.
