Over the past few years, the idea of going non-toxic has been gaining popularity. The idea sounded intriguing to me but I’m not one to jump on a bandwagon without doing a good amount of research.
I tend to gravitate toward a more natural approach to most things.
As a first-time mom, I always tried to use natural products but I wouldn’t consider myself super “crunchy” if that makes sense.
Now that my kids are a bit older and have some more time on my hands, I’ve been slowly researching and replacing certain products in my home with non-toxic products.
We are by no means a completely non-toxic home and I don’t know if we’ll ever be. But I’ve tried to make smart replacements on products that I truly believe should be toxic-free.
I started with products I put on my body (skincare, lotion, body soap) and I’ve been slowly swapping out my hair care products as well.
My latest non-toxic curly hair product fav is a line called EVOLVh.
EVOLVh is a high-end curly hair product line that is committed to formulating innovative products that heal your hair from the inside out.
Many companies fill their products will harmful ingredients that act as a band-aid for your hair but don’t deal with the root issue. Long term, this causes your curls to become dependent on harsh ingredients.
EVOLVh’s products are formulated with clean ingredients that are friendly to the environment. Their goal is function and performance.
A couple of things I love about EVOLVh
- The products have a light pleasant smell – Strong smelling products give me a headache after a while
- Formulated with clean ingredients – It’s a great way to swap out your toxic hair care line with a clean toxic free line
- The products last a long time – A little bit goes a long way
- Free from: Sulfates, gluten, parabens, propylene glycol, silicones, phthalates
- Hydrates, without weighing down – It’s the perfect amount of moisture for my 3a curls
- Medium hold – I love the super defining cream because it offers the perfect amount of hold.
I use and highly recommend EVOLVh. My curls are loving these products! You can check out my full EVOLVh product review here.

The Long Term Side Effects
For years I unknowingly used products every day that were packed full of chemicals. Even after reading a few articles claiming that there are many possible side effects of using products with toxins in them, I still wasn’t convinced.
Plus, I had a few favorite brands I used and loved that weren’t clean and I wasn’t willing to give them up.
Shortly after I had my first baby, the Johnson and Johnson scandal emerged which caused me to become more aware of the ingredients in my products.
I wanted to know what I was putting on my baby.
Since then, I’ve been on a journey to understand how certain ingredients affect our bodies and the environment and have slowly swapped many products out along the way.
The ugly truth about many skincare care, hair care, baby products, and household products in general, is that many of them are packed full of harmful ingredients.
Take baby powder as just one single instance.
Our mamas were sent home from the hospital with johnson and johnson baby powder and were told to use it to prevent diaper rash.
Fast Forward 30 years and research has shown that using baby powder can cause ovarian cancer and has for many woman. You can read more about the link between talc and ovarian cancer here.
When you think about how many different products we put on our skin and hair, it’s troubling to think of the effects of those products that contain harmful ingredients.
60% of what we put on our skin gets absorbed. That means that what we put on our skin has a huge effect on us, good or bad.
Many of our skincare products are packed full of harmful ingredients like aluminum, mineral oil, parabens, sulfates, and many more.
These ingredients have been linked to allergies, eczema, cancer, hormonal disruption, and reproductives issues.
With this overwhelming information, I can’t help but think that bringing non-toxic products into our household is super important.

Healthier For Your Hair
As a curly hair enthusiast, I want what’s best for mine and my reader’s hair.
Traditional hair products are full of harmful chemicals like sulfate, silicones, and parabens. All of which are designed to lather (for the soapy shampoo effect) and coat your hair (silicone) to make it look shiny.
When in reality, these ingredients make your hair drier and more dependent upon other products and chemical treatments.
Parabens are added to many hair care products to prevent bacteria. However, parabens are believed to disrupt hormone functions by mimicking estrogen.
I’ll be honest, switching to non-toxic hair products is hard.
Your hair will typically go through a transitioning phase that can last anywhere from a week to a few months depending on how chemically dependent your hair currently is.
But the long term side effects of using toxic products far outweigh the transitioning phase in switching to clean products.
And when you consistently use clean products, your hair will be much healthier over time.

Your Scalp Will Thank You
Healthy hair begins with your scalp. In order to grow long healthy hair, you will need to create a consistent routine that keeps your scalp clean and healthy.
By using natural ingredients, your scalp will be healthier and enable you to grow healthier hair.
Your scalp is very absorbent. Keep in mind that what you put on your scalp will be absorbed into your body.
A few things to keep in mind when it comes to scalp care is to cleanse, rebalance, and moisturize.
Note: If you are experiencing extreme scalp issues, regular use of a specific scalp cleanser may be needed.

It’s Better For The Environment
Products full of harmful chemicals pollute your body, the air, and our water. In contrast, when natural ingredients are farmed and manufactured organically, fewer toxins are put into the environment.
In conclusion:
Using products filled with harmful chemicals has many long term side effects that we aren’t even completely aware of.
By choosing clean products, over time you will have healthier hair, a healthier scalp and you will be doing the environment a favor by contributing less pollution.
Xoxo
