My husband deployed three months after we got married and while he was gone, I chopped my hair off into a tiny pixie cut.

I loved that cut and was so excited for him to get home and see it. But six months later was the first time I realized how hard it is to grow out curly hair.

I decided to grow it back and it seemed like everyone I knew had long hair and mine was stuck at a super awkward length.

It can be daunting trying to grow curly hair for two reasons…..

  1. Curly hair tends to have more damage because people aren’t sure how to detangle it plus heat tools
  2. Even if your hair is growing it seems like it takes forever because of the shrinkage

No. it’s not your imagination.

Curly hair is really hard to grow out. Especially if you aren’t properly caring for your hair.

Shortly after I started my curly journey, I decided to do a big chop to mainly get rid of years of heat damage and start with a clean slate.

But this time, I implemented a few simple tricks to help speed up the growing out process and they have helped tremendously!

I almost feel like my hair grew out overnight and trust me when I say that I have never been the type of girl whose hair grows quickly. It has always been the complete opposite for me.

Take Care Of Your Scalp

To grow healthy curls quickly, you have to take care of your scalp. Everything rises and falls on the condition of your scalp.

If you are having scalp issues, check out this post

You should be incorporating a daily scalp massage into your routine using a hair oil that promotes hair growth.

This helps to create blood circulation, hydrates the hair shaft, and keeps your scalp healthy.

You will need to do a bit of experimenting to see what type of oil works best for your specific curly type but I recommend using a dry oil that is specific to hair growth.

My two favorite oils are listed below…..

Fermented Rice Water Rinse

If you follow me on Instagram you’ve seen me rave about fermented rice water.

Rice water has been used for centuries to promote hair growth.

I kept seeing posts about it on Instagram and decided to give it a try. Now I do a fermented rice water rinse at least once per week.

It not only promotes hair growth, but it contains an ingredient called inositol and is able to penetrate your hair shaft and repair/condition it from the inside out.

Keep in mind that rice water does contain a high amount of protein. So if you have low porosity hair, you probably won’t need to do one as often.

Be sure to always track how your hair reacts to any treatment you put on it so you can adjust accordingly.

I created this daily curl tracker to keep detailed notes of my curly journey.

Protect Your Curls While You Sleep

A big part of hair loss and damage happens while you sleep. Since curly hair has a lot of texture, traditional pillowcases can cause friction to your hair which leads to damage and hair loss.

Not to mention that fabrics like cotton and polyester draw moisture out of your hair which increases dryness which then turns into damage or hair loss.

Properly protecting your curls while you sleep is a missing link for many curly girls.

The best way to protect your hair while you sleep is to use a silk cap or pillowcase. Silk helps your curls retain moisture and protects them because it’s slick.

Rather than causing friction, silk allows your curls to seamlessly glid along your pillowcase while you’re sleeping creating less friction.

I remember the first time I slept on silk, I couldn’t believe the difference it made. My curls were moisturized and frizz-free in the morning.

I use and love the scrunch it silk cap: You can read my full review here.

Take Supplements That Support Hair Growth

Growing your hair starts on the inside.

Your body needs healthy foods, circulation, and the right supplements to efficiently grow out your hair.

I know that it can be little overwhelming picking supplements because there are so many and they can be expensive.

So I keep my supplements simple.

The top supplements you should be taking for hair growth are….

  • Collagen
  • Multivitamin
  • Probiotic

These three should be stapled supplements in your daily routine and the thing I love about all of these is that they are good for your hair and your overall health.

And when your overall health is good, your hair will become stronger and faster.

You need to do your research when it comes to taking supplements because it is a financial investment.

There have many big box stores that have gotten in trouble for selling fake supplements.

I get all my supplements from a company called Modern because they are a high-quality supplement company that has great reviews.

They have an easy to use auto-ship option that I love so I don’t ever run out. It’s customizable so you can pick when you want your supplements to ship.

You can get all my favorite supplements through the links below….

  • Liquid Collagen – I love Modere’s liquid collagen because it’s a naturally derived collagen and has been scientifically tested. Liquid collagen is easier for your body to absorb.
  • Multi vitamin
  • Probiotic – this probiotic comes in a powder (that tastes delicious) and it guarantees 5 billion bacteria cells.

7 Tips To Grow Healthy Curly Hair Quickly

Deep Condition Consistently

I know it can seem like a drag to deep condition your hair. But it is oh so important.

Deep conditioning your hair add’s much-needed moisture and helps repair your hair shaft from the inside out.

Focusing on your ends while you deep condition helps repair split ends which are a huge cause of damage and slow hair growth.

If you have a hard time fitting a deep condition sesh in your schedule, I want you to change your mindset around it.

Choose a day that you are off work or home for the day and consider it a form of self-care.

Take a long shower and let your deep conditioner sit for 30 minutes. Or you can even put your deep conditioner on before bed and sleep in it.

Keep in mind that if you are going to deep condition overnight, you should make sure that your deep conditioner is formulated for overnight application.

My favorite overnight deep conditioner is Devacurls melt into moisture

Use Non-Damaging Hair Ties

Hair ties are yet another thing that wreaks havoc on your hair.

Have you ever taken a look at them after a few uses? You will find a ton of hair strands coiled around the hair tie.

That’s because traditional hair ties destroy your curls while you’re using them.

Swap your traditional hairtie out for something soft that is designed to protect your hair.

I use and love the puff cuff to fasten my hair without damaging it.

The design is easy to use and helps pineapple your hair without holding it too tightly. I use mine every single day and love it!

Choose Your Brush Wisely

Contrary to popular belief about brushing curly hair, curly girl’s can and should brush their curls. But there is a right way to do it.

The trick to brushing curly hair is found in using the right brush. Choose a brush that is designed for curly hair.

My two favorite curl friendly brushes are the Denman Brush and the Behairful Brush.

I use them and like them for two completely different reasons. You can read my full review here.

In Conclusion:

Growing out curly hair can be challenging for a couple of different reasons.

It’s hard to see the growth because of shrinkage and curly hair is at risk for damage because curls are complex.

Make your scalp a priority by incorporate a daily scalp massage using your favorite oil.

Mix up a batch of fermented rice water and run it through your hair once per week.

Always protect your curls while you sleep.

Take the right supplements to give your body everything it needs to produce gorgeous curls.

Don’t skip the deep conditioner.

And be proactive in avoiding hair damage by using the right hair ties and a brush designed for curls.

With these 7 tips, you will be well on your way to growing out healthy curls quickly.

Xoxo
