Don’t Feel Pressure to Try a Ton of Different Products and Techniques

After watching enough curly hair YouTube tutorials, it may feel like you HAVE to try a ton of different products and styling techniques, but in my opinion, the key to curly hair success is finding a product that your curls love and sticking with it! Why mess with something that is already working for you?

“But what if I’m a newbie or haven’t found any products that my curls love yet?” you ask.

There are a few curly hair essentials that every curly girl needs. Once you have found a product in each category that your hair loves, you are bound for curly hair success!

SHAMPOO/COWASH

If you have a dry scalp, I suggest cowashing, but if you have oilier hair, I suggest using a shampoo. (If you are following the curly girl method, all products should be silicone/sulfate free)

My personal favorite shampoos are Kinky Curly Come Clean and Not Your Mother’s Naturals Royal Honey & Kalahari Desert Melon Repair & Protect Shampoo

My favorite cowash is As I Am Coconut Cleansing Conditioner

CONDITIONER & DEEP CONDITIONER

As a curly, you know the struggle of dry curls. Our hair tends to naturally be pretty dry, which means we need to focus A LOT on moisture. You should be conditioning your hair every wash and deep conditioning once a week.

My favorite conditioner is Not Your Mother’s Naturals Royal Honey & Kalahari Desert Melon Repair & Protect Conditioner

My favorite deep conditioner is SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Hair Masque

LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER

In order to keep your curls hydrated between washes, a leave in is a must!

My favorite leave-in is Kinky Curly Knot Today. You can also try using some of your favorite conditioner as a leave-in!

GEL/MOUSSE

You need something to give your curls hold. I am personally a gel lovin’ girl, but many people love mousse too!

My favorite gels are Aussie Instant Freeze and Jessicurl Spiralicious.

My favorite mousse is Pantene Pro-V Curl Mousse.

CURL PROTECTION WHILE YOU SLEEP

Protecting your curls at night not only is essential to keeping your hair healthy, but it also keeps your curls looking good for days on end.

There are a ton of different ways to protect your curls at night. Silk/satin pillowcases, scarves, or bonnets, buffs, or a good ‘ol pineapple! It’s just a matter of finding what works best for you!

I personally prefer to put my hair in a pineapple using a scrunchie and sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase! Easy peasy!

Only Change One Thing At A Time

When your curls aren’t turning out how you want them to, but you’re not sure what’s wrong, the worst thing you can do is start changing everything all at once. (Aka immediately switching to entirely new products and an entirely new styling routine).

Instead, try changing one thing at a time. It’s likely that just one thing is off and just by identifying and tweaking that one thing, you will save yourself from scrapping your entire curly hair routine. Maybe your hair isn’t liking your leave-in or maybe it’s the gel that you’re using or maybe it doesn’t like the styling routine that you’re following. The only way to know for sure is by changing one thing at a time. AND by identifying what your hair doesn’t like, you’ll be saving yourself from making the same mistake in the future!

I hope these tips were helpful and give you a little encouragement knowing that curly girl method doesn’t have to be as complicated as it seems! It really, truly can be extremely simple!
