When it comes to DYI’s that work, rice water rinse is one of my favorites. It easy to make, doesn’t take long to apply, does wonders for your hair!

You may think that something as simple as a rice water rinse couldn’t possibly benefit your hair and skin, but according to many bloggers and influencers around the world, it most certainly does.
Early on in my curly girl research, one thing that kept resurfacing was a rice water rinse. After a few google search and youtube tutorials, I decided to give it a try.
What Is A Rice Water Rinse?
Just as it sounds, rice water rinse is a simple rinse made from rice. There are several different ways you can make it but they are all pretty straight forward. You can see my rice water rinse recipe here.
According to Medical News Today, the woman in the Heian period (194 to 1185 CE) in Japan kept their hair floor-length and used rice water to keep it healthy.
Present-day, the Yao women in China who live in a village called Huangluo are famous for their hair averaging 6ft long.
They are also known for keeping their hair color longer (typically don’t grey until their 80’s) and they credit their hair length and color to rice water. You can watch the video here. It really is amazing.

It’s Easy To Use
Unlike many DYI’s, rice water is essentially made up of rice and water. You can get fancy by adding deep conditioner, aloe vera, or vitamin E oil, but in its most basic form, it can still yield great results.
And since most people already have it on hand, it’s super accessible.
DIY’s can require a lot of ingredients and are sometimes over complicated. But because rice water is such a quick and easy solution, it’s gained popularity, especially within the curly world.
It can be as simple as pouring 1c of rice in 2-3 cups water, letting it sit for an hour, and pouring it over your hair.
Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy!
You Can Use It In Your Hair
Because rice water contains so many health benefits, it’s perfect to add to your hair routine.
Amino acids, B vitamins, vitamin E, minerals, and antioxidants are just a few.

You Can Use It On Your Skin
That’s right, rice water makes a great toner and can even whiten your skin.
Because rice water is highly fortified with powerful antioxidants it can destroy the free radicals in the environment created by UV rays the effect of your skin.
Also, fermented rice water contains pitera, a bacteria that is produced during the fermentation process. This promotes the regeneration of cells keeping the skin young and vibrant.
Most People Already Have It On Hand
Because most people have rice in their cupboard, rice water rinse is easy and accessible for most people.
Rice water rinse was one of the first DYI’s curly hair treatments I tried because it doesn’t require a trip to the store for complicated ingredients.

It is easy to use and accessible, it has multiple purposes and benefits, and chances are, you already have it in your kitchen.
As with any DIY product or treatment, it’s super important to always track how you used it and how it affects your hair. There is always an element of testing, and trial and error to figure out exactly what works best.
