The Truth About The Curly Girl Method That People Won’t Tell You

That’s right, there are 135,000 people each month on a mission to find a way to tame their curly hair. Today I am sharing The Truth About The Curly Girl Method That People Won’t Tell You to help you get a better idea of what to expect from it.

What is the curly girl method?

Well, Wikipedia defines it as “An approach to hair care designed for naturally curly hair that has not been chemically relaxed. It is similar to the “no-poo” method in that it discourages the use of shampoo.” You can read my interpretation of the method here.

If you do any amount of research on the web regarding the method, you will find oodles of before and after photos with the most stunning results.

Still, there are a few things about the method that not a lot of people are talking about. I’d like to share them with you today to simply offer a fuller perspective on the matter at hand.

I would also like to be clear in saying that I personally followed a modified version of the method and saw amazing results with my curls. This post is not to put a negative spin on the method at all, rather shed light on what to expect if you decided to give it a try.

It can be time-consuming

Especially when you first get started, the curly girl method can be really consuming. There is so much to learn, test, and try. And oftentimes it takes several different experiments to figure out exactly what works for your curls.

Before you get started, know that if you want to see real lasting results, then you are going to need to commit to learning about your hair, and testing different products and techniques.

I highly recommend documenting every step along the way to be able to look back and see exactly what works and what doesn’t.

I use and love the My Miracle Curls Daily Tracker because it’s designed with the curly girl in mind and has a place to document each step of your curly journey.

This makes figuring out what works and what doesn’t a heck of a lot easier. It also helps you not make the same mistake twice which is oh so annoying, trust me.

It doesn’t always work right away

The method works but it takes consistency and time. Your curls are not going to magically pop up into perfectly bouncing curls overnight.

Commit to creating a realistic curl routine and establishing healthy daily habits. Focus on falling in love with the process and the results will come. I promise. See 10 Curly Girl Habits You Must Know To Have Perfect Curls

Results vary

Just because that girl you follow on Instagram went from stringy waves to voluptuous curls doesn’t mean that you will too. Curls were meant to be free and have a mind of their own.

It’s REALLY important to focus on learning about what you curls need to thrive and allowing them to be their unique self.

It’s really confusing

Spend a small amount of time researching the curly girl method and you will find a good amount of information that contradicts each other.

This goes back to the fact that every curl is different and has different needs. It’s important to take the time to learn about and experiment with your curls. That’s why it is so important to closely document your journey.

That’s why I created this quick guide to help you get started on your curly girl journey.

Everything, I mean EVERYTHING affects your curls

Did you know that the dew point in your local area has an effect on how your curls react to products? That right, when the dew point is low, it can cause an ingredient in most products called glycerin to take the moisture from your hair and distribute it into the environment.

Pretty crazy right? Read more here about dew points and glycerine here.

Curls are not always as they seem

You know the phrase “don’t believe everything you hear and only half of what you see?” The same applies with curly hair.

It’s super easy to use lighting and angles to your advantage when it comes to photographing curls. And with good reason. Because it’s also hard to capture the full beauty of curly in a photo.

So just be careful when you are following all these gorgeous curly girls and don’t be fooled into thinking that they don’t struggle with halo frizz or limp curls. I promise they do <3

It takes grit

I’m gonna give you a little tough love and tell you that sticking with the curly girl method takes grit. You are going to want to quit, you are going to believe it’s not worth it, and there are going to be people that simply don’t appreciate your curls.

But I’m also here to tell you that there is a wonderful life on the other side of accepting your curls and loving them. So stick with it, curl Buddie <3

It’s SO worth it

Learning to love and accept your curls is so dang worth it!

There is nothing like being able to rock your healthy, voluminous curls with pride and truly loving them along the way.

It’s so therapeutic for a girl who never fit in with her curls to finally have the confidence to rock them with pride. So girlfriend, never give up!

In Conclusion: When it comes to the curly girl method, there is a plethora of content with tons of different ideas and results.

Does the method work? Heck yeah, it does!

But keep in mind that it can be time-consuming, results vary it, everything affects your curls, curls aren’t always what they seem, it takes grit, but it is so dang worth it!!
