Why Overnight Protection?

Curly hair is fragile! To keep those spiraled curl clumps, you have to protect them overnight.

Not tying your hair up and sleep on harsh fabrics can cause breakage, frizz, and even hair loss.

Failing to protect your hair while you sleep can also cause your hair to become brittle and dry.

However, no one way fits all overnight protection. Every curl is unique and has different needs. It all depends on your curl pattern and the technique you are using to protect your curls.

Below are a few different night protection techniques.

Add Moisture

You know that feeling when you wake up in the middle of the night dying of thirst? Your hair does too!

Sprits a bit of water on your curls and run hands over it (using the praying hand’s method) before bed each night. This helps add moisture and will reactive your gel.

Sometimes it will even create a curl cast in the morning which is great!

I use and love this spray bottle.

Do A Scalp Message

Incorporate a scalp treatment before bed.

This stimulates blood flow to your scalp which increases hair growth and keeps your scalp healthy. Not to mention it is incredibly relaxing.

Pineapple

Pineapple is a super popular way to protect your hair at night.

Flip your hair over your head and bring it all the way up toward your forehead. Secure your hair right above your forehead with a non-damaging hair tie.

Spritz a bit of water on the top curls to add moisture.

Note: If you have loose curls like me, a pineapple may not be your best option. It can pull out some of your curls especially around the nape of your neck.

I use these non-damaging hair ties.

Always, Always, Always Sleep On Silk

Sleeping on silk has been an absolute game-changer on my curly journey.

Since silk is smooth to touch, it causes little friction and breakage and allows your hair to glide smoothly as you sleep.

Early on in my curly journey, I used an inexpensive silk cap. But I just couldn’t get comfortable in it.

My absolute favorite silk cap to sleep in is the Scrunch it sleeping cap.

It is by far the most comfortable and easy to wear throughout the night.

Loose Bun

Similar to pineapple but instead of pulling your hair all the way forward, you just pull it to the top of your head and secure it with a curly friendly hair tie.

This is a better option for loose curls or wavy’s.

FreeStyle

This method is letting your hair free and sleeping on a silk pillowcase or wearing a silk bonnet.

Silk helps hold in moisture and cause little friction which can lead to breakage and frizz.

This is the other way I protect my hair but I will say it requires more of a refresh in the morning.

I love this silk pillowcase & the scrunch it night cap.
