Two years after my youngest was born, I started wanting to bring my curls back.
I went through straightening and over-processing my hair phase after he was born (read my story here) and my hair was severely damaged.
I started losing hope that I’d ever have bouncing curls again….
…..until I stumbled on the curly girl world over on Instagram and found several girls who had damaged hair similar to mine but were able to completely recover them.
Two huge things that held me back about the curly girl method were….
- It seemed hard to understand and there is so much information out there, I didn’t know where to start.
- I didn’t want to spend a ton of money on a product I wasn’t sure would even work for my hair.
Which is why I created a “Getting Started With Curly Girl Method Cheat Sheet” for you! <3
You Don’t Have To Spend A Ton Of Money On Product
When you start diving into the curly girl method, it’s really easy to get caught up in buying all the things. See What You Actually NEED For Curly Girl Method On A Budget
This was a downside that held me back from starting the curly girl method right away.
I almost made the huge mistake of buying a high-end product package before I did the work of figuring out what my hair needed.
While I do think high-end products are helpful, there is absolutely no reason this should deter you from getting started.
There area plethora of affordable DIY recipes you can make at home that will still yield beautiful curls!
When getting started with CGM, it is so hard to know exactly what your hair needs.
Basic products I recommend starting with are…..
- A Conditioner
- Leave-In Conditioner (optional depending on your hair type)
Choosing to research and experiment with what my curls needed BEFORE I made a hefty product purchase, turned out to be a really good decision.
Not All Curls Are Created Equal
Learning to accept the fact that not all curls are created equal makes it a little bit easier to accept when a few of your curls just aren’t doing what you want.
My curls range from 2b-3a and sometimes I just don’t know what i’m going to get.
Like, literally the weather, water temperature, and the number of times you scrunched your hair can make a difference on how your hair is going to curl.
So make peace with the fact that some of your curls will love you and some just want to do their own thing.
& that’s perfectly ok 🙂
Don’t Put Expectations On Your Curls
The quickest way to get defeated following curly girl is to follow a whole bunch of curly guru’s and start comparing your curls to theirs.
Don’t do that.
You may not get the results they got because your hair is probably more different than you even realize.
Focus on your hair health and what works for your curls. Then give them the freedom to be unique.
Being Part Of A Curl Community Is Gold
While I don’t recommend comparing your curls to others, I highly recommend becoming part of a curly community. You can join mine here.
Instagram is my favorite platform and so many accounts offer valuable tips and tricks to following the curly girl method.
Some of my favorite accounts are……..
I follow all of these accounts for different reasons but they all offer valuable content around curly girl mothod.
I highly recommend giving them a follow! <3
Patience Is Key
It took me a solid month to experiment with products, DIY treatments and techniques before I found something that worked for me.
& guess what? It looked much different from what a lot of the people on Instagram were doing.
Be willing to push through the bad wash days and try something different next time.
Your perfect curls are right around the corner. Don’t give up!
Don’t Write Off Products Or Techniques Until You’ve Given Them A Solid Chance
There are so many different things that go into whether a product or technique works for you.
The first few products I tried, I didn’t like.
But after reading and researching the proper way to apply them, now I love them!
To sum up my first 30 days following curly girl, I am so very happy with the outcome and wish I would have started sooner.
It’s definitely something that you need to commit to and put the work into researching and being consistent.
But my hair is the healthiest it’s been in years and I have LOVED the journey.
